DISCLAIMER: MANDATORY COMMUNITY NOTICE: Threats have evolved and users are getting burned by avoidable mistakes. Over 99% of malware issues happen when clicking fake filehost buttons or running unsolicited installers. Read and follow these three golden rules.
Hey everyone,
We need to talk about file safety. The threats have evolved and we're seeing more users get burned by stuff that's entirely avoidable. This post is going to save you a wiped PC, so read it carefully.
🛡️ The Three Golden Rules. That's It.
1. Always Use an Adblocker (Zero Exceptions)
uBlock Origin is 100% free, open-source, and takes 30 seconds to install.
Most file hosts out there are plastered with fake "DOWNLOAD" buttons that are actually malicious advertisements pointing at malware, Discord account hijackers, crypto wallet drainers, and info-stealers. Without an adblocker, you cannot reliably tell the real button from the fake trap — that's by design, because that's how those hosts monetize. If you download without an adblocker, you will eventually click the wrong thing. It's not a question of if.
Host Transparency: For what it's worth, Mega, GoFile, and Pixeldrain are the cleaner hosts and don't pull this nonsense. The others (buzzheavier and similar) are where most of the fake-button traps live. Keep your adblocker turned on regardless.
2. Be Smart About File Sizes
Every legitimate host displays the exact file size before you hit download. Always verify it.
If a download is 1 MB or 2 MB and you're downloading what should obviously be a full game, app, or high-res media pack, something is wrong — that's not the file, that's malware wearing the file's name.
Rule of Thumb: When in doubt, check the size across multiple hosts in the thread. If Mega says 3 GB and the link you just clicked says 2 MB, you clicked the wrong thing. Close it, delete it, turn your adblocker on, and try again. This takes 2 seconds and catches 95% of mistakes.
3. Do NOT Run Installers Unless the Thread Explicitly Says To
This is the single most critical rule. Over 99% of threads on this forum are "extract and run" or "unzip and run" — that's it. No installer.
If you downloaded something and an .exe or .msi setup wizard launches and asks to install software to your PC, and the OP thread did not explicitly declare an installer is required, that is malware. Do not run it. Delete it immediately.
The roughly 1% of threads that legitimately need an installer are niche games or specialized engines where the OP will clearly declare it. If the thread doesn't say it, it is not legit.
🔍 What We Do On Our End
We are not passing files along blind. Every file shared here goes through a strict vetting process before the thread goes live. We check what we share.
The danger is almost never the file in the OP — it's what gets substituted when you click the wrong fake button on the host's page, or when you run an installer that the thread never told you to run.
If something seems off:
- Don't run the file.
- Report the thread immediately so staff can inspect it.
- Post in the thread and ask before doing anything irreversible.
We'd rather answer a hundred "is this normal?" questions than help clean a compromised PC.
📋 Staff Policy Going Forward
"I got a virus from your site" reports will be met with three simple verification questions:
- Did you have an adblocker turned on?
- Did the file size match what the hosts listed in the thread?
- Did the thread explicitly declare an installer was required?
If the answer to any of those is no, that's where the conversation ends. We've spent months educating people on these exact three safeguards. Take care of your data. We'll keep doing our part — you do yours.
